Overcoming Pornography Addiction: A Journey to Freedom

Excerpt: Introduction

Course: Freedom From Pornography

Speakers: Ryan Miller

I was addicted to pornography for about ten years. During that time, I tried everything to break free from its grip but found myself continuously failing. If you’re here reading this, you’re probably in a similar situation. You’re wondering if something’s inherently wrong with you, questioning your faith, doubting your self-control, and feeling a deep sense of shame for not being able to shake this habit that you despise.

The Struggle is Real

You’re here because you hate pornography, yet you’re inexplicably drawn to it. I understand that frustration and pain. However, I want to encourage you right now—God sees you, and I believe He is going to bring breakthrough into your life. You’re yearning for healthy relationships and genuine intimacy, but you’ve settled for fleeting, harmful imagery. That was my story as well.

There is Hope

I’m here to share with you, along with some of my friends, a few things that have helped us find freedom from this horrific struggle. If you don’t have the faith to believe that there’s hope for you, borrow some of mine. I believe that God is going to do a transformative work in you through this journey.

Commitment to the Course

This journey is going to be challenging, and it requires your commitment. If you truly desire freedom, you’re going to find it. God is going to meet you with greater intimacy, and you’ll start to see the allure of pornography fade as you experience genuine connection and healing.

Facing the Challenge Head-On

I want to commend you for taking this step. Engaging in this struggle head-on, instead of hiding or running from it, is the beginning of healing. However, let me be clear—this journey is not just about pornography. It’s about freedom. It’s about shifting your focus from the problem to the things that truly matter, allowing the allure of pornography to lose its power.

What This Course Is Not

Not Just for Men: If you’re a woman struggling with this addiction, know that you’re not alone. Many women face this battle, and it can feel isolating. God sees you, and He is with you in this struggle.

Not Just Tactics: While we will provide practical tactics and strategies, this journey goes deeper. It’s about diving into the root causes of your addiction and addressing the wounds that have led to this struggle. True healing comes from pulling out the addiction by its roots.

Three Requests

Commitment: Lean into this journey, even when it gets hard. The root word of courage means to share one’s story honestly, which sometimes involves revisiting painful wounds. Commit to seeing this journey through to the end.

Compassion: Be compassionate with yourself. Often, we’re trapped in a cycle of shame, which is where the enemy wants us. Jesus meets us with compassion. He sees us as harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Look at yourself through the lens of Jesus’ love and compassion.

Community: Don’t go through this alone. Confession and sharing with a trusted friend, support group, or therapist are vital steps towards healing. The Bible says that when we confess our sins to each other, we are healed. Bring your struggles into the light with the support of others.
