Excerpt: Practices for Building Community
Course: Freedom From Pornography
Speakers: Ryan Miller
Finding Your Community
So, what do you do if you feel you lack a supportive community? The truth is, community exists, whether you recognize it or not. If you’re not part of a trusted faith community, I believe that’s the ideal starting point.
Building Trusted Relationships
Once within a faith community, it’s vital to identify safe individuals. As you test the waters of those relationships, share vulnerable aspects of yourself. If they respond with grace, you’ve found a safe haven.
It’s unwise and unbiblical to disclose your struggles to everyone. Instead, seek trusted relationships where vulnerability is met with grace.
Accountability
If you lack an accountability partner or group, prioritize finding one. This is paramount. We are wounded in relationships and healed in relationships. Discovering relationships built on trust is essential for walking in your God-given fullness and overcoming this struggle for good.
Joining Faith Communities and Seeking Safe Relationships
If you’re not already part of one, seek a trusted faith community as a starting point. Within that community, find individuals who demonstrate grace and understanding. Gradually share vulnerable aspects of yourself and observe their responses. Find an accountability partner or group to provide support and guidance.
Conclusion: The Power of Community in Your Journey to Freedom
Overcoming pornography is a journey best traveled with others. Isolation perpetuates shame and vulnerability. Community, particularly within a faith context, offers the support, grace, and accountability necessary for lasting healing and freedom. Prioritize building trusted relationships and allow the power of community to transform your life.
