Cultivating Soft Soil to Overcome Pornography

The Bible provides a practical three-step formula for overcoming pornography, found in Psalm 119: ‘How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word; with my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments; I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.‘

God’s Word as Your Guide

The overarching principle is clear: immerse yourself in God’s Word. Meditate on it, obey it, and hide it in your heart. Sin, at its core, is rebellion against God, often stemming from the belief that life is better outside His will. God’s Word refocuses us on the best path.

Understanding Your Heart’s Soil

Jesus’s parable of the sower illustrates this. The seed, representing God’s Word, only thrives in good soil, which symbolizes our hearts.

Hard Soil (Path): Represents a hardened heart, unreceptive to God’s Word. Wounds and unaddressed issues lead to using pornography as medication. In this state, the enemy steals the seed.

Rocky Soil: Represents a shallow faith, easily withered by trials and temptations. It lacks the depth to endure hardship.

Thorny Soil: Represents a heart choked by worldly cares and pleasures, prioritizing dopamine hits over God’s will.

Good Soil: Represents a cultivated, soft heart, where God’s Word takes root, flourishes, and produces fruit.

Cultivating Good Soil

You might experience moments of shifting between these soil types. Cultivating good soil is an ongoing process, requiring effort and intentionality. It involves watering, fertilizing, and removing weeds—the enemy’s flaming arrows and worldly distractions.

Taking Control of Your Mind

Our coaching ministry emphasizes taking thoughts captive. The enemy uses thoughts and wounds to steal joy. This requires a lifestyle that prioritizes spiritual disciplines and rest.

Rooting Your Identity and Lifestyle in Christ

To cultivate soft soil and resist temptation, root your identity in Christ. Establish a lifestyle of spiritual disciplines. Address underlying wounds. Seek accountability. Prioritize rest.

Conclusion

This isn’t just about stopping pornography; it’s about cultivating a lifestyle that yields lasting fruit. By cultivating soft soil, you create an environment where God’s Word can flourish, transforming your life and impacting generations to come.
